Here is a tool that allows researchers/authors to get a global online identification that helps others track your publications wherever they are online: http://orcid.org/

Collections that are free for most African Researchers (or to researchers from Low Income Countries):

  • The International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP), runs the SRKS programme, which offers (amongst other things) free access to large amounts of academic literature from all over the world. Click on their drop down list on the right hand side of their website for your country to see what they can offer to you.
  • Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA) – free or reduced-cost international agricultural journal online access for selected countries via institutions by Research4Life. Check the website to see if your country is eligible, and if it is, ask your librarian to sign up.
  • HINARI is for Access to Research in Health, and works in the same way as AGORA above.
  • Online Access to Research in the Environment (OARE) – again, refer to AGORA above for information. Check the website to see if your country is eligible, and if it is, ask your librarian to sign up.
  • Another Research4Life collection is Access to Research for Development and Innovation (ARDI)
  • The African Digital Library (ADL) is a collection of electronic books (eBooks) that can be accessed and used free-of-charge by anyone living on the African continent.
  • https://www.aluka.org/struggles and https://www.aluka.org/heritage. A collection of data from around the world on or relating to Africa. Access is free via African institutions, so speak to your university librarian about signing up.
  • JSTOR’s African Access Initiative allows free access to the full online journal archive of nearly 1000 titles from all disciplines to any academic or not for profit institution on the continent of Africa.
